THE RISE AND FALL OF JAKOB BAUER

about

The main material of “The Rise and Fall of Jakob Bauer” is an archival recording found at the Vienna Phonogrammarchiv, recorded on wax-disc in 1913 and preserved by the Archiv’s staff in the format of an iron cast. The recording is 1 minute 30 seconds long rendition of Hebrew Shabbat chant “Lecha Dodi” performed by the Viennese cantor Jakob Bauer (1852-1926). The piece by Bumšteinas involves the process of digital removing of the voice from the digitalized version while leaving only the noises of the original recording medium (crackling, hissing, humming etc.). The voice is removed and reappears again in a new guise, which is represented by twelve amateur vocalists from Vienna who were asked to sing along to the chant’s melody and verses while hearing it for the first time through the headphones at the recording studio. The title “The Rise and Fall of Jakob Bauer” refers to the process of capturing of the human voice onto a recording medium and it’s gradual loss due to the temporal deterioration of the medium. The title also has some associations with the documentary cinematic and litterary genres.

“The Rise and Fall of Jakob Bauer” is commissioned by TONSPUR, Vienna.

LP will be released in 2018 on Gruenrekorder label’s sound art series.
