Esperantosound

from UNIFORMS by Arturas Bumšteinas

/

about

Esperantosound is inspired by Robert Smithson's drawing Heap of Language (1966), which consists of 20 lines of text. Reading from top to bottom (and from left to right), every next line is augmented by one or two words, and the whole drawing looks like Tower of Babel, a multilayered mountain of words. The seventh line of the drawing consists of the following words: esperanto aldo pantomime dumb show literature. These words (or, more properly, their acoustic parameters adapted to the composer's needs) was the primary material for composing pitches and durations of sounds in esperantosound. This composition is the composer's second attempt to explore the sonic possibilities of Robert Smithson's Heap of Language. Before that, the drawing was interpreted as a 'graphical score' by Bumšteinas' electronic music collective Quartet Twentytwentyone.
