about

Arturas Bumšteinas – stage direction, music
Inari Virmakoski – voice, performance

Music-theater/performance piece by Arturas Bumšteinas based on an extended interview with Finnish performance artist Inari Virmakoski who in 70s-80s lived in Tanzania and Somalia and acted as a volunteer medical worker and health education officer. In MORE MUSIC FOR SAM Inari’s stories from Africa are counterpointed with music which she was surrounded at that period of her life (and it’s not only African traditional music, but also Finnish pop-rock, classical music, mainstream entertainment music etc…).

The narration of MORE MUSIC FOR SAM is inserted into the landscape of symbol-objects borrowed from Samuel Beckett’s plays. The old rocking chair (from Rockaby), the bowler hat and a dead tree (from Waiting for Godot), heap of dirt (from Happy Days), tape recorder (from Last Krapp’s Tape) and other “beckettiana” is re-interpreted in a new, un-expected ways that both help and disturb Inari from relating her stories.

MORE MUSIC FOR SAM commissioned by Cricoteka, 2015.
