about

“Rome Bird” for whistling and playback

This piece was composed for Lithuanian trumpeter Dominykas Vyšniauskas to be premiered in Sound Around festival in Klaipėda, 2013/09/08.

The piece consists of playback and instructions for whistler. The playback part consists of a single tone from a clay whistle recorded in the city of Rome. The tone from the whistle was blown in various random sites of Rome – on the streets, yards, inside churches, shops, near the river, at the restaurant etc… The sounds were captured together with the ambient noises of the spaces. The role of live performer in this piece is to provide an improvised line of whistling which would rise from the single playback’s tone and develop a counterpoint in relationship to the sound events heard in the ambient noises of the playback part. The piece ends with field recording of the real birds from the street of Rome.
