about

Composition for organ and the collage of archival recordings by cantors Moshe, David, Jacob and Simcha Koussevitsky.

Arturas Bumšteinas wrote “Brothers K” inspired by the creative legacy of four brothers cantors Koussevitsky; Moshe (1899-1966), David (1912-1985), Jacob (1903-1959) and Simcha (1905-1998). All of them went through the service years in the Great Synagogue of Vilna and thoughout their lives worked in different synagogues around the world. Most from all brothers are known Moshe and David, who toured frequently with their cantorial art performances not only around the synagogue circles, but mainly the top international concert institutions of their days. After the WWII, on the 26th of December 1947, four brothers met in New York City and in Carnegie Hall they held a concert together titled “The Four Koussevitsky Brothers”.

Arturas Bumšteinas researched various recordings of the Koussevitsky brothers (ritual synagogue music as chazzans, traditional arranged Jewish songs, classical concert repertoire and various artistic collaborations composing and performing concert music based on Jewish liturgy), then the artist selected fragments of music where their voices are not heard. Thes extracted accompaniments (kinf of redux, karaoke, minus etc. version) were mixed into a collage of 4 soundtracks, each atributed to one of the four brothers. The organ part was created as an accompaniment for the accompaniment, thus making the disctance between us and the four brothers even more vast.
