Arturas Bumsteinas - Chronicles of Orgelsafari

from UN/RELEASED VARIA by Arturas Bumšteinas

about

For few weeks of the year 2016 artist Arturas Bumšteinas together with his creative team travelled in the Land of Saxony. The area where Bumšteinas, Lithuanian organist-improviser Gailė Griciūtė and German sound engineer Paul Paulun travelled is where the borders of Germany and Czech Republic meet. They drove along the border and visited a dozen of small towns where they recorded pipe organs in a dozen of different churches. The towns which they visited in chronological order are: Sebnitz, Sohland, Waltersdorf, Grosschonau, Zittau, Oybin, Hornitz, Weesenstein, Klingenthal.

The performance of „Chronicles of Orgel Safari“ tells the story of the travel that was kind of a tourist trip with church organs as objects of site-seeing. The travel with all it’s mediocre adventures (however trivial they would be) are emphasized as a narrative of this project.

The live performance consists of music composed from the processed organ sounds, diffused around the audience with a use of 8 speaker surround system, the author reading live the diary written during the safari, guest performer playing the self-built organ pipes and with a video projection. The performance ends with the author playing on clay whistles. Thus structure of the whole performance reminds of the process of dismantling of the organ instrument and bringing it into it’s prototypical condition.

There is also a staged intervention during the performance when representative of the cultural institution which commissioned the project comes in front of the audience and delivers a speech equivalent of an ‘experimental commercial break’.
