about

composition for 12 vocalist ensemble

„thus time goes by“ is a vocal adaptation of Robert Filliou‘s text „Whispered Art History“ (1963) which features the first mention of the art‘s actual birthday (as according to the French Fluxus artist). The text starts with the description of anonymous man who, 1 million years ago, for the first time conceived art by dropping a dry sponge into a bucket full of water. In general the text consists of 12 similar descriptions of almost domestic, yet slightly eccentric situations of creativity, relayed in the chronological, calendar manner.

Vocalists of the Phonix16 ensemble were invited to the studio one-by-one and asked to improvise along with the Filliou‘s own whispered recording. Every vocalist improvised melodies and tones that were later used by the composer to create a polylogue of the diverse personal tastes and spontaneously arisen musical patterns.

Twelve vocalists on stage (including the conductor) take us through one-million-year-long history of emanations of creativity and presents us with the objects of it‘s evidence.

Commissioned by Deutschlandfunk Kultur (Klangkunst) and composed during the DAAD Artist-in-Berlin residency programme, 2017. Premiere by Phonix16 in Berghain Kantine, Art’s Birthday, 2018/01/17.

LP of Robert Filliou’s “Whispered Art History” is released on Slowscan Records, vol.30.
